Executive Position

Sfu OpenMedia execs plan out fun events like our past Lawful Access Documentary Screening or Ugly Sweater Party. Execs get full immersion into the Vancouver media scene as they blog and vlog different media events!

This Thursday on January 26th at 6pm on the Burnaby Campus (on the couches around the aboriginal art at the bottom of the stairs by saywell hall), we are holding a brief info session for an executive position! Find out if the position is right for you! Please RSVP so that you can fill out an application form before you attend! sfu@openmedia.ca

Do you want to stay engaged and involved with Sfu OpenMedia Club but really have too much going on already? Stay active in media democracy through spreading the message in other ways!

Other Volunteering Opportunities:

Tabling tables are usually set up with all club materials to engage, educate and recruit the student body! You can volunteer to sit in on a few shifts alongside an exec to do some fun civic engagement and meet new people along the way!

In Class Presentations Help us deliver 2 minute spiels about the club and the work that OpenMedia is doing! Advertise the club’s events and opportunites.

-Event Help be an honorary exec for a day and help out at one of our events! …the more the merrier!

-Guest Blogging and Vlogging Love to write or be on camera? Write us a media issues related blog post and it may be featured and promoted here on our blog! We also have a youtube channel that you can upload videos to! Check out some of our older vids .

Screening of “(UN) Lawful Access” Date: Wednesday October 26, 2011 Time: 2:00pm Place: SFU Harbour Centre, Policy Room 1425 Presented by SFPIRG Action Group, Sfu OpenMedia You’re invited! The social club that advocates for media democracy on campus, Sfu OpenMedia, invites you to our screening of the mini-documentary, “(Un) Lawful Access.” Expert opinions across Canada are given concerning the conservative government’s proposals for cyber surveillance in the omnibus crime bill. Since OpenMedia has achieved over half a million signatures to show opposition to the proposal, the government has since omitted the proposal from this particular crime bill. Who is to say that they will not try to push the invasive proposals in the future? Learn about the severity of cyber surveillance infrastructure (not only privacy rights but rights as a consumer). Start poppin the popcorn, this screening is on!

Dr. Kate Milberry is a postdoctoral fellow in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. Her research examines the democratization of technology as a tool and technique for progressive social change. Kate’s current work focuses on the anti-surveillance technologies and social practices of tech activists in the global justice movement. In particular, she examines the relationship between free software development and activist web applications, considering how democratic values and unmet user needs are designed into technology. Kate has a PhD in Communication from Simon Fraser University and MA in Communication and Social Justice from University of Windsor.

Hey you guys! We’re back from summer break feeling reinvigorated and completely pumped for the Fall semester to kick off! Seeing as how Clubs Day is this week, we’ve decided to put up this nonchalant introductions video of ourselves; find out why we joined the club and what it is about media that we just gosh darn love so much!

We’ll be sharing a table with SFPIRG in Alternate Clubs Day tomorrow by the water fountain located just before the Rotunda, from 11:30 onward. Then Clubs Day the day after in Convocation Mall, same time. Come drop by and say hi!

Summer Festival was so rad!

The summer festival hosted by SFU’s Alternate Reality Club was super rad!

Our booth! equipped with our media loving board and wheel of media fortune

We set up a table, being the only advocacy/school club group at the event, and we met so many great characters. The mountain had a comic con/nightmarket feel with live entertainment, lots of folks dressed up as their favourite characters, prizes and food! We were lucky enough to meet Darth Vader himself as well as Sailor Moon and Buddha!

We did not forget that we were there to spread the good word about media democracy! Our team decided to have a wheel that passersby could spin. Each number signified a certain task and corresponded to a certain prize. If one could complete the task, they could choose their prize or he/she could admit forfeit and accept a bag of candy! A few tasks included, telling two random people about Usage Based Billing, listing three reasons why Lawful Access laws could be bad or helping us increase our twitter followers! Enjoy pictures of the event below!

Thank you to all who helped make the event and prize giving possible! shout outs to Sfu ARC , Nester’s on the mountain, SFU Bookstore, Open Media, parents who helped out, Eric Vuong for bringing his camera and snapping photos, Sam Alder for building us a wheel, so many more and everyone who stopped by to say hello!

Summer Festival July 16, 2011!

Hello!! please excuse our absence on the blog but we have been tweetin’ like mad!

Tomorrow (or today, depending when you read this) we will be set up at the Summer Festival.

We are super excited and have so many great giveways!

We have Open Media T-shirts, water bottles, more T-shirts, gift cards, counter culture design books, hoodies, LOTS OF CANDY and more T-shirts! The giveaways are great! You can’t miss out on this alternate reality…the mountain will never look better (this summer).

There are rumours of cream puffs, fashion shows!, contests, live performers, watermelon smashing, media loving, magic prize wheels and more! We’ll be there spreading the good word (no biblical affiliation intended) and we’d love to meet you!

Our favourite thing to do is discuss media issues, our second favourite thing to do is collaborate. So please, shoot us an e-mail at sfu@openmedia.ca with any questions or concerns or opportunities to collaborate on exciting projects!

Sfu Open Media….what’s the buzz?

So you’ve heard about us or maybe met some of our reps but what’s this club all about?

Sfu Open Media operates under the guidance of the national, non-profit organization– Open Media. Both groups work together to push for an open and democratic communications system in Canada. How do we achieve that? We promote civil engagement with government policies or different media issues. Sfu Open Media works to increase student and faculty’s awareness and keep campus dwellers in the know. The club is also very excited to throw events for students to increase fun and awareness at the same time! How can you stay in the loop? The most current campaign we are advocating is the stop the meter campaign, which encourages Canadians to speak out about Usage Based Billing (a brief youtube vid that gives you the run down).

Busted!

If you were on campus last Thursday, March 31 you might have noticed some extra security on campus. Or maybe you were one of the unfortunate people who got caught exceeding your data limit.

From 3-3:30, SFU OpenMedia.ca clubbers took to the halls of the Burnaby campus to spread the word about Usage Based Billing and the wildly successful Stop the Meter campaign . Dressed as “Internet Cops”, we handed out data infraction tickets to laptop users and students in the computers labs. It was a blast! Be sure to check out the photos on our Facebook page

So, its that time of the semester again. Deadlines are looming, exams are just around the corner and sleep is a luxury you just can’t seem to afford right now.

Lucky for you, SFU OpenMedia.ca club has the perfect remedy for the end of semester blues! On Thursday, March 31 at 3pm we’re organizing a flashmob on the mountain! That’s right, we’re bringing people together via social media (yea Internet!) and word of mouth for some on-campus creative social action.
